The Treatment Helpline

Suboxone is a medication made of buprenorphine and naloxone and is most commonly used during heroin detox. Buprenorphine is an opioid that is similar to heroin, but it does not give the body the sense of euphoria that heroin causes. This sense of euphoria is an effect of heroin that users crave, sending them into a world of addiction. Naloxone is used to block the effects of opioids. The buprenorphine is dissolved right away when suboxone is taken, subduing the side effects of withdrawal, while the naloxone is released in small amounts to block the opioids.

The benefits of detoxing with suboxone is that it is not addictive, in part, because of the naloxone, it decreases the symptoms of withdrawal and the cravings for opiates because of the buprenorphine. Suboxone can be used in home detox processes, although it is still recommended to seek out a facility to help support during this process. The patient is tapered off of the drug slowly with dosages decreasing every three or four days until completely off of the drug.
